Annual Golf Outing

Annual Golf Outing
The annual CATA golf outing was held on Friday, June 11th at the Orchard Creek Golf Course in Altamont. The day included 18 holes of golf with cart, continental breakfast, lunch at the turn, a great barbecue chicken and rib dinner plus prizes.


Cloud Computing

Data Center consolidations and budget concerns have government entities and educational institutions looking at new initiatives. One of the key initiatives will be using cloud computing technology to drive a shared services model and to create efficiency. Overall management of resources, energy consumption (heating, power and cooling), increased security for data and users as well as lower overall costs have all been key factors in looking at cloud models. In this session, Verizon Business will provide an overview on the enterprise direction for cloud computing, as well as options for securing the cloud.

CATA’s May meeting will feature speaker Rock Regan, a Senior Information Technology and Systems Executive, and former Chief Information Officer for the State of Connecticut.

Disaster Recovery

The April 2010 meeting topic was Disaster Recovery with our guest David Snyder. In this presentation Mr. Snyder provided an overview of the differences between Disaster Recovery and Emergency Preparedness as well as recommendations and guidelines for developing a comprehensive emergency preparedness plan.

David Snyder, CIO at Ellis Hospital Bio

David H. Snyder is the Vice President of Information Technology and Chief Information Officer for Ellis Medicine in Schenectady, New York. In this position, David is responsible for oversight of the Information Technology, Clinical Engineering and Voice Communications divisions as well as ensuring most appropriate use of advanced information technology concepts at Ellis Medicine and affiliated entities. Prior to joining Ellis Mr. Snyder held a variety of senior technology roles including: 5 years as an executive in the information technology department at Albany Medical Center; 5 years managing the local healthcare practice for Keane, an Information Technology Consulting services firm; and 11 years as a technology specialist for Shared Medical Systems.

Mr. Snyder is a Fellow in the Health Information Management Systems Society, and holds his Certification as a Professional in Health Information Management Systems. He is a past chair of the Microsoft Healthcare User Group and currently sits on the Membership & Recognition Committee of the Board for the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society.

The February 10th meeting of the Capital Area Technology Association will feature of panel of experts in the Unified Communications field.

Unified Communications includes the collapsing of multiple technologies running on separate platforms and servers to fewer platforms and servers and perhaps eventually a single platform.

Technology Growth for Tech Valley

Luther Forest Technology Campus

The Luther Forest Technology Campus played a big role in getting AMD, now GlobalFoundries, to commit to building a $4 billion manufacturing plant here in Tech Valley.

Mike Relyea discussed how the overall culture of Tech Valley created a knowledge based economy in our area over the past 15 years. He also discussed what physical attributes are going to be necessary to sustain this knowledge based economy and how other major players in Tech Valley are creating a pathway for more companies to grow and prosper in our region.
